Meet your network leader: Ricky Mui BSc LLB ’97
A globally seasoned recruitment executive with more than 20 years’ experience across Europe and Asia leading regional growth and talent strategies to managing multi-office operations across Greater China, Ricky brings deep commercial insight and a powerful professional network.
With a background in law and leadership roles spanning legal and recruitment sectors, he is passionate about connecting people and opportunities. As a committed alumni leader, Ricky champions an inclusive, well-connected Hong Kong community and loves helping fellow graduates grow, collaborate and thrive.
A lifelong connection with UWA
Following graduation, Ricky still felt a strong connection to UWA. Some of the best years of his life were spent on campus, and those great memories remain with him. He can still picture the countless hours studying in the Reid and Law libraries, basketball games at the gym, and lively social moments at the Ref and the Tavern. Not to mention Prosh Days, Law vs Engineering tug-of-war and afternoons socialising in the Law courtyard, toga parties and, of course, his amazing graduation day – all these experiences helped shape who he is today.
“I was fortunate to meet lifelong friends and learn from incredible professors, lecturers, and tutors,” he said. “My time at UWA provided a strong academic foundation and reputation that helped open doors and support my career growth.”
Ricky remained closely connected with many of his UWA friends and often returned to campus for special occasions and events, taking full advantage of the University’s facilities.
“Those visits always reminded me of the strong sense of UWA community”.
From Perth to London to Hong Kong
In 2000, Ricky left Perth to work overseas and settled in London. Although far from home, this time abroad helped him connect to fellow UWA ‘expat’ graduates, building friendships and professional ties that extended across countries.
After moving to Hong Kong in 2010, he took a leadership role in strengthening the UWA alumni community, forming a local committee and working with the University to grow a vibrant network that connects graduates across industries.

“Success is rarely achieved in isolation”
For Ricky, the UWA alumni network is where friendships, professional networks and leadership come together. He is proud to have helped establish the Hong Kong alumni committee, bringing together graduates from diverse industries to stay connected and support each another.
These relationships have also enriched his recruitment career, where he engages alumni as candidates and business leaders. Together, these experiences have reinforced his belief that strong communities and meaningful connections help people grow, lead and thrive.
UWA alumni memories
Over the years, Ricky has been involved in a range of alumni activities – from hosting leadership panels and webinars to organising lunch for visiting professors and festive networking events. While each experience has been rewarding, three moments stand out as particularly memorable.
- The annual end-of-year networking drinks, where new and familiar faces come together to connect and share stories. These events highlight the size and vibrancy of the UWA alumni community in Hong Kong, bringing together influential leaders, senior executives and professionals.
- Another unforgettable experience was meeting the Honourable Robert French CitWA in 2017 and hosting an exclusive breakfast meeting with Mr French and selected alumni attendees. With Ricky’s legal background, hosting the former Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia, and non-permanent judge on Hong Kong’s Court of Final Appeal, was especially meaningful.
- More recently, the Hong Kong Alumni Reception 2025 marked a milestone as the first in-person event with visiting professors since CoVid. Featuring an engaging panel of academics and industry leaders, the evening enabled more than 60 alumni to reconnect, celebrate achievements and showcase the strength of the UWA community in Hong Kong.
“UWA is more than just a university… it’s an experience that stays with you,” he said. “With its stunning campus, world-class facilities and inspiring professors, UWA leaves a lasting impression on everyone who studies there.”
Ricky takes pride in what UWA represents and the high standards it upholds. Whenever friends or contacts ask about moving to Australia, he always recommends Perth – which he describes as “a peaceful, safe, and vibrant city” – and UWA as the university of choice.
For him, it’s a place that not only provides an outstanding education but also fosters a community and lifestyle that are unmatched.
