A civic leadership initiative designed to fast-track the journey of emerging leaders into politics, government and the public sector is now open for applications.

The 2026 Waratah Program WA will run from 5 September to 24 October 2026, delivered by The University of Western Australia's Global Engagement Office and the Asian Leadership Foundation, with support from the Federal Government's National Foundation for Australia-China Relations.

Building on the success of the inaugural WA cohort, the program supports emerging leaders from Asian-Australian and culturally diverse communities, helping strengthen Australia's democratic institutions and civic leadership

Through seminars, leadership workshops and conversations with experienced leaders, participants gain a deeper understanding of Australia's political and institutional landscape, while developing the skills, confidence and networks needed to lead in complex and multicultural environments.

Associate Professor Maggie Jiang, Associate Pro Vice-Chancellor (Global Engagement) at UWA and joint program convenor, said the initiative reflected a commitment to inclusive and transformative leadership.

“We are proud to support a new generation of leaders, particularly those from diverse cultural backgrounds who are ready to shape a more equitable, ethical and engaged public sector,” Associate Professor Jiang said.

The program features sessions delivered in a hybrid format, combining online learning with in-person sessions at UWA's Crawley campus and covers civic engagement and strategic decision-making, while supporting culturally and linguistically diverse leaders.

Emphasising ethics, integrity and sustainable change, the program develops leadership and communication skills to navigate complex policy environments and lead with confidence and impact.
