When Levi MacDonald began his work integrated learning (WIL) internship with the Conservation Council of Western Australia (CCWA) in Semester 1, 2026, he was looking for guidance on where his career might lead. As a Bachelor of Biological Science student with a passion for Australian bats and previous volunteer experience with CCWA, the opportunity to undertake an internship as an acoustic analysis intern allowed him to combine his interests with valuable industry experience.
"I trained in and developed the hard skills necessary to conduct acoustic analysis of bat vocalisations, along with the soft skills associated with working in a close-knit office and maintaining a healthy work/life balance."
Through the internship, Levi not only strengthened his technical capabilities but also deepened his knowledge of an area he is passionate about. The experience provided practical insight into conservation work while helping him build confidence in applying his academic studies to a professional setting.
A standout moment of Levi's internship was attending his first professional conference, the joint Australian Mammal Society (AMS) and Australasian Bat Society (ABS) Conference in Canberra.
Supported by his supervisor Kelly, and an Australasian Bat Society student travel grant, Levi presented a research poster at the conference and achieved an academic milestone, winning the Australasian Bat Society Best Student Poster Award.
While proud of this achievement, Levi says the people he met made the greatest impact.
"The highlight of the conference for me was meeting so many like-minded people and hearing about the variety of research projects and jobs people are involved with, and the level of collaboration and support within the community."
His supervisor also praised his accomplishments, noting that this was Levi's first conference and that he did an incredible job.
The internship has had a lasting influence on Levi's future aspirations. Through developing his skills in acoustic analysis and working alongside experienced professionals, he has gained the confidence to pursue a career working with Australian bats.
However, it was the mentorship and encouragement he received that left the strongest impression.
"The most valuable influence from my internship was my supervisor, Kelly. As I move forward with my career, I am determined to instil the same support, encouragement and kindness I received from Kelly into all my future relationships."
Levi's journey demonstrates the power of internship experiences to connect students with industry, build confidence, and help turn personal passions into career pathways.
