Walking together on campus: honouring connection, culture and generosity

In a powerful demonstration of unity and shared purpose, The University of Western Australia was proud to host two major initiatives as part of the Danjoo Koorliny movement: the NAIDOC Elders’ Luncheon and the Djilba Summit. These events brought together Aboriginal Elders, community leaders and partners on campus to share stories, celebrate culture and build a stronger, more connected future.

At the heart of these gatherings lies a deep commitment to ‘walking together’, a term that is both the literal translation of its name and the driving purpose of Danjoo Koorliny, a long-term change project that continues to grow and thrive, thanks to the generous support of Lotterywest and Minderoo Foundation.

Celebrating Elders, honouring legacy

On Tuesday 8 July, more than 80 Elders came together at the University Club for the annual NAIDOC Elders’ Luncheon. This special event, guided by the 2025 NAIDOC theme Next Generation: Strength, Vision and Legacy, offered a culturally safe and joyful space for reflection, storytelling and connection.

With powerful words from speakers Kim Collard and Aunty Carol Pettersen OAM, moving music from Noongar performer Fred Penny, and collaborative art and conversations, the luncheon was a reminder of the wisdom and strength held by Elders in our communities.

“This is the only event that gives our Elders a chance to come together and yarn and share,” said Kayleen Hayward, Elder and event participant.

Thoughtful measures such as accessible transport, inclusive seating and carer support – made possible through the project’s donors – ensured every Elder could take part with dignity and comfort, emphasising the value of connection at every level.

A place of courage, truth and possibility

Less than a month later, on August 5 and 6, UWA became the meeting place for the Djilba Summit, a two-day gathering that explored the theme Empowerment through Action, Innovation and Collaboration, while creating a space for bold conversations and deep learning.

The event was officially launched by Premier of Western Australia, Hon Roger Cook MLA, with UWA Chancellor Diane Smith-Gander AO welcoming all to campus. Their presence, along with that of newly appointed Danjoo Koorliny Co-Director Jahna Cedar OAM, underscored the growing recognition of Aboriginal-led leadership as central to the State’s future.

From Indigenous perspectives on AI and ancestral intelligence, to discussions around collective wealth and community-driven economic models, the Djilba Summit was a space for inspiration and transformation. Aboriginal entrepreneurs, innovators and participants explored ways for cultural wisdom and modern technology to work hand-in-hand and build a better, stronger future.

“People will come and go but land will always remain,” said Selwyn Hayes, international guest and summit presenter. “Indigenous voices need to be key in resetting systems that dominate the globe.”

More than a venue

Through these events, UWA became more than a venue. It was a space where Elders reconnected with laughter and love, where leaders shared bold visions for the future, and where community came together in strength and unity. In a reflection of its founding mission, UWA was transformed into an expanse of powerful community connection and empowerment.

By supporting Danjoo Koorliny’s events, Lotterywest and Minderoo Foundation are investing not only in cultural and social outcomes, but in real systemic change led by Elders, informed by community and grounded in truth. Their commitment to uplifting Aboriginal-led initiatives and fostering connection across community is helping us build a more connected, just and inclusive world.

As Danjoo Koorliny continues its journey toward 2029 and beyond, UWA is proud to provide a home for these critical conversations. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all who made these gatherings possible.
