Marine biology student Jorgia Blanks has been named the inaugural winner of the Elizabeth Pearce Marine Science Award.
Granted to the highest-achieving student each semester enrolled in The University of Western Australia’s Master of Marine Biology who submits a research thesis, the award provides $2,000 financial assistance to travel, attend and present at the annual Australian Marine Sciences Association (AMSA) conference.
The opportunity to attend the conference is significant as it paves the way for research collaborations, internships and future employment. The 2026 AMSA conference will be held in Canberra.
Originally from Adelaide and now a Fremantle resident, Jorgia said her research examined long-term shifts in marine invertebrate communities in south-western Australia, focusing on the implications of these changes for ecological roles and functions.
“Since completing my thesis, I have broadened my focus and am now working as a research assistant across a number of marine social-ecological projects,” she said.
“These include exploration of how recreational fishing practices can better support sustainability, as well as how people understand, value, and interact with marine parks.
“Having started out in my career as a field-based research diver, later moving into ecological research and now social-ecological projects, I have been fortunate to experience a wide cross-section of marine science disciplines.
“The AMSA conference provides a valuable opportunity for me to explore the ways in which these different skills and interests can intersect in practice.
“I especially look forward to presenting my own work and engaging with researchers across diverse fields, which will help to inform both my current projects and future direction in marine science.
“This is such a wonderful opportunity and I feel very honoured to be able to represent Elizabeth and her memory.”
Hosted by the UWA Oceans Institute, the Elizabeth Pearce Marine Science Fund provides a deeply meaningful legacy to support students who share Elizabeth’s passion for marine sciences. To date, the fund has raised $51, 630 through the generous support of Elizabeth’s family, friends and community.
