Ten years since their adoption, a new report will reflect on the UN Sustainable Development Goals – what has been learnt and what is required to deliver a more sustainable and equitable future.
The report, Sustainable Development Goals: Local, Regional & Global, will be launched by The University of Western Australia’s Public Policy Institute on Monday 2 December.
Adopted by world leaders in 2015, the Sustainable Development Goals aimed to provide a shared framework to tackle inequality, climate change, environmental degradation and barriers to human wellbeing.
A decade later, progress remains uneven, and the world is not on track to meet the goals by 2030.
The report brings together leading perspectives across all 17 Sustainable Development Goals and highlights evidence-informed pathways to strengthen sustainable development in Australia and across the region.
The launch will open with remarks from Richard Damania, Chief Economist at The World Bank, offering a global view on the state of sustainable development.
He will be followed by Michael Sheldrick, co-founder of Global Citizen, Professor Jessica Meeuwig Wen Family Chair in Conservation from UWA’s School of Biological Sciences and Oceans Institute, and Professor Kadambot Siddique, Director of the UWA Institute of Agriculture.
Associate Professor Paul Maginn, Director of the UWA Public Policy Institute, said the 10-year milestone was an important moment to reassess both progress and direction.
“Reflection is not about slowing down, it is a foundation for better decisions and stronger collaboration,” Associate Professor Maginn said.
“This report highlights where efforts are working, where gaps remain, and what is needed in the decade ahead.”
The event will also provide a forum for cross-sector networking and the exchange of ideas among policymakers, researchers, industry and community leaders.
The report will be launched on Monday 2 December at 6pm at the Ernst & Young office at 9 The Esplanade in Perth CBD. Register for tickets here.
