Celebrating 25 years of audiology education

The University of Western Australia’s Master of Clinical Audiology course is celebrating 25 years of shaping clinical practice, research and education through its enduring impact.

Since the course began in 2000, it has produced almost 300 graduates, many of whom now form the majority of practising audiologists in Western Australia, including national and international leaders.

The course, one of only six university audiology programs offered in Australia, was established in response to a rapidly growing need within the community.

Its inception began with a meeting of a small group of local audiologists and research scientists from UWA’s world-renowned auditory laboratory.

Senior academic leaders worked closely with audiologists from the WA community to design a curriculum that balanced scientific rigour with clinical practice.

Associate Professor Helen Goulios, who is now the Clinical Director Audiology, said at the time, there was no audiology program in WA.

“The only previous course had closed, which meant students had to travel interstate to complete their studies,” she said.

“Meanwhile, the demand for audiologists continued to grow, leaving many local employers struggling to find staff.”

Associate Professor Goulios said during the past 25 years, the course had grown in size and scope while maintaining its foundations in the fundamental sciences.

“It has continued to develop collaborations with key organisations to support student research projects, with partners including the Ear Science Institute of Australia, Perth Children’s Hospital, Fiona Stanley Hospital and The Kids Research Institute,” she said.

“What has always distinguished the UWA audiology program is its deep connection to the Western Australian community.

“The course largely owes its success to the unwavering support of local audiologists who have mentored students, contributed to teaching, and promoted the profession.”

To celebrate the program 25th anniversary, more than 100 graduates and supporters attended an event at the UWA Club this month, which included a panel discussion featuring five eminent alumni.
