Medical experts and community leaders recognised in King’s Birthday Honours

A world-leading anaesthetist, endocrinologist, and biophysicist and radiation protection expert are among the 24 UWA-affiliated staff and alumni recognised in the King’s Birthday Honours.

Professor Richard Prince, National Health and Medical Research Council chief investigator (1987-2019),  was recognised with an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for distinguished service to endocrinology as a researcher and clinical physician, to tertiary education and to professional societies.

Dr Michael Repacholi, BSc '65 and World Health Organization coordinator for the Radiation and Environmental Health Unit (1995-2006), was recognised with an AO for distinguished service to medical research as a radiation protection physicist, to environmental health and to professional medical societies.

Dr Michael Smith, DLitt '14 and an Honorary Doctorate recipient, received an AO for distinguished service to business governance, to the management consulting sector, to sports administration and to the arts.

Mrs Dianne Blood was also recognised with an AO for distinguished service to mechanical engineering through innovation and robotic design and to diversity and inclusion.

Professor Britta Regli-von Ungern-Sternberg was recognised with a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for her life-changing research to reduce risks associated with anaesthesia for children, to make surgery and recovery safer.

A consultant anaesthetist at Perth Children’s Hospital and Chair of Paediatric Anaesthesia at UWA, Professor Regli-von Ungern-Sternberg co-leads the Perioperative Care Program and Perioperative Medicine Team at The Kids Research Institute Australia.

Professor Timothy Jones has been recognised with an AM in the General Division in honour of his work in medical research. His career has spanned more than three decades, with interest areas in paediatric endocrinology and diabetes research.

Professor Jones is currently the director of research at Perth Children’s Hospital, and he is continuing his medical research journey with his team, who aspire to “find a cure” for diabetes.

Professor Michael Henderson, former Australian Research Centre for Medical Engineering chair, Industry Advisory Committee founder, received an AM for significant service to community health, to education and to the community.

He is also the founder and Chair of the International Skills and Training Institute in Health (ISTIH), a not-for-profit that philanthropically upskills medical professionals in developing countries, an institute that has UWA and the Government of WA Department of Health as core partners.

Mr Iain Grandage, BMus '94, DMus '17 and Perth Festival artistic director (2020-24),  has been recognised with an AM for significant service to the arts as a composer and artistic director.

Former West Eagles, Geelong and current Carlton AFL CEO Mr Brian Cook, MEdMan '82, was recognised with an AM for significant service to Australian rules football, to business and to the community.

Mr Graeme Prior, BCom '84, received an AM for significant service to the aged care sector and to Alzheimer's disease research.

Adjunct Professor Katherine Galloway was recognised with an AM for significant service to the law, to education and to the community.

Mr Graham Swannell, BE '75, received a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for service to aeronautical engineering.

Mr Michael Thompson, BJuris '76, LLB '77, was recognised with an OAM for service to the tourism and travel industry.

Mr Raymond George, BSc '52, PhD '59, received an OAM for service to science and to the community of Albany.

The late Mr Richard Liston, BA '02,  was recognised with an OAM for service to community history.

Mr Barry McKenna, BPEd '82, MEdMan '94, received an OAM for service to the communities of Perth.

Mr Roy Dowsett, GradDipEd '80, was recognised with an OAM for service to the community and to youth.

Ms Sue McDougall, BLArch '16, received an OAM for service to horticulture through media roles.

Ms Irina Cattalini, BA '01, was recognised with an OAM for service to the community through a range of roles.

Ms Jann McFarlane received an OAM for service to the community of Western Australia.

Ms Miranda Cummings, LLB, BA '11, BA(Hons) '11, was recognised with an OAM for service to youth through Girl Guides.

Dr Mark Bloch, MBBS '82, received an OAM for service to medicine.

Mr Ambrose Mungala Chalarimeri received an OAM for service to Indigenous heritage conservation.

Mr Dean Michael Lee was recognised with a Public Service medal for  outstanding public service in the oversight and management of the Shrine of Remembrance.

The King’s Birthday Honours list recognises and celebrates the outstanding contribution of Australians
