Sustainable finance collaboration between Australia and China to support decarbonisation efforts will be the focus of an event co-hosted by The University of Western Australia this week.
The event on Thursday 19 June is supported by the National Foundation for Australia–China Relations (NFACR) and co-hosted by UWA, the University of Queensland, the Australian National University, the Australian Sustainable Finance Institute and the International Institute of Green Finance.
The panel will explore the theme Australia and China: Shared Interests and Opportunities for Sustainable Finance as a Vehicle for Growth and discuss sustainable finance objectives, climate-related financial disclosures and cross-border investment.
Dr Rui Zhong, from the UWA Business School and lead researcher of the NFACR-funded project Towards Interoperability of Australia-China Sustainable Finance Taxonomies, said experts would highlight how collaboration could drive sustainable financial systems.
“This is an opportunity to explore how Australia and China can strengthen relations and facilitate cross-border investments in green projects,” Dr Zhong said.
“Whether you’re a finance professional, policymaker, researcher or sustainability advocate this will offer timely insights and actionable perspectives into how green finance cooperation between the two nations could be achieved.”
Gary Cowan, CEO of the National Foundation for Australia–China Relations, will deliver the opening address and the event will be moderated by Professor Howard Bamsey, Honorary Professor at ANU’s School of Regulation & Global Governance.
The panel features Professor Yao Wang, Director General of the International Institute of Green Finance and Director of the Dual Carbon and Finance Research Centre at Central University of Finance and Economics; Ms Purdie Bowden, an executive at the Australian Sustainable Finance Institute; and PC Chan, Chief Executive Officer of Hong Kong Quality Assurance Agency and officials from the Commonwealth Treasury.
The panel will discuss the importance of sustainable finance objectives for a transition to climate-friendly and generally sustainable development in China and Australia, as well as the key characteristics and themes of the goals developed by the two nations.
Attendees can join in person at ANU’s RSSS Auditorium or online via Zoom on June 19 from 5pm to 7pm (AEST). To register and for more information click here.
