Diane Smith-Gander AO has been formally installed as the 16th and first female Chancellor of The University of Western Australia.

During a ceremony in Winthrop Hall last night, His Excellency the Honourable Chris Dawson, Governor of Western Australia, presented the new Chancellor with her regalia – formally symbolising Dr Smith-Gander’s appointment to steward one of the country’s leading universities.

Dr Smith-Gander formerly chaired the UWA Business School Board and is an Adjunct Professor of Corporate Governance at the University.  The University awarded her an Honorary Doctorate in Economics in 2015.

Dr Smith-Gander, who has been associated with UWA for more than 50 years, said she was greatly honoured to be appointed Chancellor.

“I am first and foremost a West Australian,” she said. “I will never forget that this University is obliged by its purpose to take wisdom and to impart wisdom for the prosperity of the people in WA,” she said.

UWA Vice-Chancellor Professor Amit Chakma said the University was fortunate to have such an experienced business leader at the helm.

“On behalf of the UWA community it is an honour to welcome our new Chancellor, Diane Smith-Gander,” Professor Chakma said.

“She brings more than three decades of experience in corporate leadership, strategy consulting and board governance in Australia, Asia and the United States, as well as a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities in higher education.

“Dr Smith-Gander succeeds the Honourable Robert French, whom I would like to thank for his immense and transformational contribution to the University over his tenure.”
