A sport program that promotes inclusivity and safety for LGBTQIA+ individuals by enhancing visibility, participation and cultural change has been recognised at  the 2024 WA Sport Awards.

The UWA Sport LGBTQIA+ Allyship in Sport Program won the Hyundai Sports Initiative of the Year Award last week.

The program was launched in December 2023 and is WA’s first initiative that promotes inclusivity and safety for LGBTQIA+ individuals in sport while fostering allyship and anti-discrimination principles.

Kristina Mitsikas, UWA Sport’s senior manager of inclusion and innovation, said the program empowered UWA Affiliated clubs with the knowledge, tools and resources to foster LGBTQIA+ inclusion and support for participants, athletes, volunteers, members and spectators.

“Winning this award is an incredible achievement; we were nominated alongside two other outstanding finalists, with both making a positive impact on inclusion in sport,” Ms Mitsikas said.

“This recognition is a testament to everyone’s dedication and genuine efforts toward making our clubs more inclusive for the LGBTQIA+ community.”

Through participating in the program, UWA Affiliated clubs commit to pride through active allyship, education and awareness training.

“I think the most significant impact has been our journey with our clubs,”  Ms Mitsikas said.

“Diversity is welcomed through our sporting doors, and inclusion enables us to work in a meaningful and impactful way, enhancing participation, creating positive experiences and fostering a sense of belonging.”

The program includes an LGBTQIA+ club checklist and the development of action plans, building the capacity to champion inclusive and anti-discrimination practices across community sport.

“The program enhances visibility and provides a framework for long-term, sustainable change, driving a cultural shift within the UWA sporting community,” Ms Mitsikas said.

Clubs currently engaged in the program include: UWA Rugby Club; UWA Football (AFL) Club; UWA Ultimate Club; UWA Baseball / Softball Club; UWA Taekwondo Club; UWA Volleyball Club; UWA Outdoor Club; UWA Athletics Club; UWA Fencing Club; UWA Hockey Club; and UWA Netball Club.
