Work is due to start on The University of Western Australia’s new student accommodation building at its Nedlands site next week.

This follows a major milestone with the construction contract officially signed with construction partner Lendlease.

The project, approved earlier this year through the Development Application process, will see the construction of a 14-storey building at the corner of Gordon Street and Hampden Road.

The accommodation will feature 847 beds across 671 apartments, offering a mix of studio, two-bedroom, and four-bedroom layouts.

Designed to enrich the student experience, the building will include communal spaces, study areas, recreational facilities, landscaped outdoor spaces and a ground-floor café open to the community.

The development responds to the increasing demand for student housing near the Crawley campus, representing a significant investment in the student experience and ensuring UWA remains an attractive choice for both domestic and international students.

The development aligns with UWA’s long-term campus vision, integrating sustainable growth with contemporary student living.

UWA Director of Campus Management, Trevor Humphreys said the University had worked closely with the local community, stakeholders and planning authorities to ensure the project was delivered responsibly.

“It’s important that we respect the heritage and character of the area while meeting the needs of our growing student population,” Mr Humphreys said.

“Culturally significant trees will be retained, and seeds from existing trees will be harvested and replanted after project completion.

“This approach supports the restoration of the native landscape and reflects our commitment to environmental sustainability and cultural heritage.”

Lendlease has been appointed as the construction partner, with The APP Group as project manager.

Ben Symons, Lendlease Executive General Manager, Western Australia, Construction, said Lendlease’s partnership with The University of Western Australia reflected collaboration and a shared commitment to delivering UWA’s long-term vision.

“This project will meet the growing demand for student housing near the Crawley campus and represents a major investment in the student experience, with work set to commence in the coming weeks.”

The accommodation is expected to welcome its first students in Semester 1, 2028.
