Browse for a bargain at the annual Save the Children winter book sale at The University of Western Australia next week.
Held in the Winthrop Hall Undercroft, the charity event is now in its 61st year and enables vital funds to be raised for vulnerable children in Perth and Australia, as well as overseas.
More than 10,000 people visit the sale to peruse the 120,000-plus books, which are sorted by a dedicated team of volunteers at UWA’s Claremont campus.
Save the Children Community Fundraising Manager Sonia Holmes said it was a big job for the volunteers to sort, clean and price the books donated by the public.
“As well as a large number of books across many categories the sale features jigsaw puzzles, DVDs, CDs, LPs and sheet music,” Ms Holmes said.
“We put out fresh stock daily to ensure everyone has the chance to bag or box some bargains.”
From humble beginnings in 1964 when the University branch of Save the Children Australia raised £101 through its first book sale at UWA, the event is now WA’s largest second-hand book sale.
“By buying a book at the sale you are helping to make a difference to the lives of children in need all over the world,” Ms Holmes said.
"Our organisation works to protect children’s rights, improve their health and safety, and increase access to education.”
There will be a flash sale of with a more select collection of rare books, collectables, children’s book sets and puzzles on Saturday 16 August from 9am to 4pm and Sunday 17 August 9am to 2pm or until sold out in Hackett Cafe, next to Winthrop Hall.
