Student numbers add up at Maths Olympiad

Students from Perth Modern School and a student from Christ Church Grammar School have taken out the top individual and teams prizes in WA’s Maths Olympiad hosted by The University of Western Australia.

Mark Lee, from Perth Modern School, was the most outstanding Year 9 student and overall winner of the competition.

Terry Li, from Perth Modern School,  was the most outstanding in Year 8 student and Sally Huang, from Perth Modern School, and Lucas Feng,  from Christ Church Grammar School, tied for most outstanding Year 7 student.

It was a clean sweep for Perth Modern School in the team competition, winning the most outstanding awards across all year levels.

•    Most outstanding Year 9 team: Mark Lee, Cassie Lee, Angela Huang, Tiger Varol;
•    Most outstanding Year 8 team: Ashvin Balavignan, Victor Chen, Shayan Islam, Ethan Ang
•    Most  outstanding Year 7 team: Grace Zhu, Zicheng Wang, Thomas Yuchen Kong, Sally Huang

The competition, where calculators are banned and the emphasis is on ‘brains only’, aims to challenge, inspire and nurture the love of mathematics while identifying the top young students in the State.

The prizes were awarded at UWA on October 19 following the competition, which attracted almost 500 individual competitors and 116 teams from 22 schools.

The best performing students and teams from each year were presented with prizes totalling more than $4000 sponsored by UWA, Curtin University, Edith Cowan University, Murdoch University, the WA State Department of Education, Mathematical Association of Western Australia, Data Analysis Australia, New Edition Bookshop, Optiver, and Casio.

The Olympiad has been hosted by UWA since 1999.
