Six students represented UWA at the recent UniSport National Athletics Championship at Gold Coast Performance Centre, Queensland on Friday 24 April 2024.
The UniSport Nationals Athletics event students from numerous universities who contested both men’s and women’s events over the two-day event. The standalone Athletics event provides the opportunity for students from across Australia to compete head-to-head in different athletic disciplines. The winners of the Championship events throughout the year will combine with count towards the annual competition for the Overall Nationals Champions, including results from other Championships as well as the flagship UniSport Nationals event held in September.
UWA Maali’s representatives included some experienced campaigners at the athletics event. Sarah Hynes attended her impressive sixth Athletics Nationals supported by fellow student athletes Anthony Ghiselli and Annie Pfeiffer. Sarah Hynes experience has spanned from 2018 up to the recent nationals in the Gold Coast. Last year, Sarah Hynes won gold in the 4x400m Women’s relay race alongside fellow UWA students.
Overall, UWA Maali placed seventeenth in the women’s competition and the men fell just outside of the top 20, placing 21st of 31 universities. In a competitive field, three UWA athletes were able to place a position on the podium across different athletic disciplines. Congratulations to Anthony Ghiselli who won gold in the 800m event, Tiana Pavlovich who took home the silverware in the Javelin event with a distance of 47.08m, and Sarah Hynes who achieved bronze in the 1500m event.
