UWA Sport General Manager Jake Wilkins welcomed members of UWA’s University Basketball League (UBL) team, and Indigenous Student Services Director Naomi Wheat to the jersey presentation held at Bilya Marlee on Tuesday 12 March 2024.
The University Basketball League (UBL) is a national university basketball competition first established in 2021. The seven-week competition involves both men’s and women’s divisions with fourteen universities competing across six states in a home and away format.
The ceremony marked the official commencement of the new playing group ahead of the new season. Jake Wilkins congratulated the 2024 UBL athletes, coaches and support staff and acknowledged the significance of representing UWA on a national level. Overall, the ceremony signified the pride in celebrating and embedding indigenous culture at UWA Sport.
UWA Student and player in the UBL Men’s squad, Damien Zhang, then, explained the significance of the design to the players, before Noongar Elder Barry Winmar led the group in a traditional Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony. The morning concluded with each coach announcing the squads and presenting the Maali jersey numbers to each player.
