The University of Western Australia has a continual roll call of awards, scholarships and prizes presented to staff and students.

To recognise these achievements, an article is published on the UWA news page on the website and in UWA Forward on the first week of every month. If you know of great awards or achievements across the University please email [email protected]

Name: Aaron Ludlow
Achievement: Senior research Fellow Aaron Ludlow, from the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research, has been awarded funding from the Matariki Seed Fund. He will lead the project The SWAN Universe Project: Simulations for Wallaby and the Nearby Universe in partnership with Durham University, Dartmouth College, and Queen’s University.
His project was one of five awarded funding by the Matariki Network of Universities, an international group of universities created in 2010.
The project Ethical use of Gen-AI in Higher Education led by Uppsala University in partnership with UWA, Queen’s University, Durham University, and University of Otago also received funding.

Name: Simon Lang
Achievement: Professor Simon Lang, from the School of Earth Sciences, has been recognised as a National Geoscience Champion. The awards recognise geoscientists who have made lifetime contributions to science, craft and art, evidenced by technical, leadership, mentoring and collegial endeavours.
Professor Lang has made an immeasurable contribution to advancing Geoscience in Australia as an academic, industry geologist or leading field courses for people at all levels of professional development. He has published extensively and made important contributions to the teaching and practice of Geoscience in the international arena. Professor Lang is recognised as a leading Australian expert in sedimentology and stratigraphy.

Name: Sven Ouzman
Achievement: Dr Sven Ouzman, from the School of Social Sciences, has been recognised in the 2023 Australian Awards for University Teaching. The senior lecturer was the recipient of a Citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning for using collaborative experiential teaching that activates Archaeology as a bridge between Arts and Sciences to upskill an increasingly diverse cohort of future leaders. The awards were initiated in 1997 by the Australian Government to celebrate and honour excellence in university teaching.

Name: Nikki Schonfeldt
Achievement: Dr Nikki Schonfeldt, from the Business School, has been recognised in the 2023 Australian Awards for University Teaching. The senior lecturer was the recipient of a Citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning for developing Information and Communication Technology skills in accounting graduates through progressive teaching practices and assessments, and industry collaboration. The awards recognise university educators nationwide, celebrating programs and practices that enhance learning and teaching in higher education.
