The UWA Maali T20 Cricket team have earned silver medal at the UniSport Australia T20 Cricket Nationals competition on Friday 12 July 2024.
The new team were motivated to succeed at this year’s competition given the abrupt ending to the 2023 T20 Cricket Nationals. In 2023, the team narrowly missed out on the opportunity to compete in the 2023 finals due to rain delays.
Held at Maroochydore Cricket Club, Queensland, it seemed as though participants were going to witness a repeat of the weather conditions that have previously plagued the competition, with the first two days of competition being rained out due to torrential rain conditions.
However, the UWA Maali remained optimistic that play would resume and that they would be able to display their talent on the big stage.
With weather clearing up, the competition kicked into gear on Wednesday with the Maali recording a narrow loss against Macquarie University. UWA Maali quickly bounced back the following day, with convincing wins over University of Sunshine Coast (124 runs) and University of Sydney (33 runs).
The journey towards the grand final match involved road bumps and rain delays, but the UWA Maali team persevered to earn the top spot in their pool. UWA Maali took on The University of Queensland in the grand final game in front of the opposition’s home crowd.
UWA Maali fought valiantly, but ultimately fell short by 3 runs.
Congratulations to the students representing UWA Maali at the 2024 UniSport T20 Cricket National Championships.
