The University of Western Australia has a continual roll call of awards, scholarships and prizes presented to staff and students.
To recognise these achievements, an article is published on the UWA news page on the website and in UWA Forward on the first week of every month. If you know of great awards or achievements across the University please email [email protected]
Name: Alan Jamieson
Achievement: Professor Alan Jamieson, founder of the Minderoo-UWA Deep Sea Research Centre, received an Order of the British Empire for services to Marine Biology, Subsea Engineering and Exploration. Professor Jamieson, from UWA Oceans Institute and the School of Biological Sciences, was awarded the honour on December 30, 2023. Professor Jamieson was the chief scientist of the expedition which set a new record for the deepest fish ever filmed and the deepest fish ever caught. He has over 20 years of experience in deep-sea science, technology and exploration.
Name: Isaac Bhalsod
Achievement: UWA’s Bachelor of Biomedical Science student Isaac Bhalsod has been awarded the City of Swan’s 2024 Young Community Citizen of the Year. Isaac received the award for his life-saving advocacy while displaying remarkable courage in the face of a personal tragedy. In 2022, his father, Ashwin, died after trying to save his two sons from the surf at Yallingup Beach – emergency services took seven minutes to provide the pin code to unlock the box that contained the defibrillator. This tragedy led Isaac, who was 16 at the time, to put pressure on the authorities to improve defibrillator procedures. His efforts resulted in a generic pin code for all defibrillator lockboxes, shared amongst WA emergency services.
Congratulations UWA staff, alumni and students.
