Book lovers rejoice! Save the Children's annual winter book sale is returning to The University of Western Australia  this week.

Rick Joyce, a former vice principal of Poynter Primary School in Duncraig,  has been volunteering with Save the Children for the past four years before becoming president this year.

“When retired I joined my wife, who was already a volunteer at the Claremont Depot, to do the heavy lifting,”  Mr Joyce said.

“It’s a worthwhile charity and a really nice social group but they needed someone to pick up all the boxes full of books.”

Mr Joyce and a team of dedicated volunteers, which includes three 80-year-olds and two 70-year-olds, sort, clean and price the books donated by the public.

The first sale in 1964 was organised by wives of professors at UWA who raised £101 and has grown to become the biggest fundraising event in WA for Save the Children.

“Attendees can expect an outstanding number of books across many categories as well as jigsaw puzzles, DVDs, CDs, LPs and sheet music,” Mr Joyce said.

“About 120,000 books will be taken to the sale, with new stock placed out daily to ensure everyone has the chance to get a great book at a reasonable price.”

There will be a flash sale of with a more select collection of rare books, collectables, children's book sets and puzzles on Saturday 17 August  from 9am to  4pm and Sunday 18 August 9am to 2pm or until sold out in Hackett Cafe, next to Winthrop Hall.
