UWA top sporting students honoured with Sport Excellence Scholarships

Four extraordinary UWA students have been awarded a prestigious scholarship to study while at The University of Western Australia.

The UWA Sport’s Sport Excellence Scholarship offers
up to $15,000 of financial assistance aimed to assist and encourage high performing student athletes to pursue an undergraduate qualification at the University and realise their dual career aspirations.

The 2024 recipients of the UWA Sport’s Sport Excellence Scholarships are:
Iona Anderson – Swimming
Keishin Ochi – Judo
Austin Van Der Struyf – Australian Football Rules
Fraser Hyatt – Australian Football Rules

One scholarship recipient, Iona Anderson, is currently studying a Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in Accounting and has represented Australia recently at the 2024 World Aquatics Championships held in Doha, Qatar.

Iona has recently claimed success at the recent championships winning gold in the Women’s 4x100m medley relay, and winning silver in both the Women’s 100m backstroke and Women’s 50m backstroke.

"I was over the moon to hear that I won the scholarship and very shocked as well, as it’s a very highly contested scholarship."

UWA Student Athlete, Iona Anderson

Keishin Ochi, a gold medallist at the 2024 Judo Australia endorsed Canberra International Open and WA State Championships events, is currently studying a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) at UWA.

"I was really proud to tell [my parents] and do something for them because they’ve been supporting me throughout my supporting and academic endeavours."

Austin Van Der Struyf and Fraser Hyatt are recipients of the UWA Sports Sport Excellence Scholarship for Australian Rules Football. The Goodeve Foundation has donated funds to The University of Western Australia to provide a scholarship to assist and encourage high-achieving student playing for the University Football Club to pursue an undergraduate degree at the University and realise their dual career aspirations.
