Open Day with the School of Engineering

23/05/2023 | 2 mins

UWA Open Day is a great opportunity to showcase our world-leading campus and facilities. This year, around 15,000 attendees were on campus to enjoy a showcase of our courses, research, employability and career opportunities, student support services and extracurricular activities.

The School of Engineering ran multiple activities in the Materials Testing Lab and Hydraulics Lab on the day including environmental engineering demonstrations, meeting the robots, showcasing our renewable energy vehicles and demonstrations of our hydraulic press. While visiting the labs, prospective students had had the opportunity to learn all about the engineering innovations behind our cutting-edge technologies from academics and current students.

Many student clubs were also involved this year and helped showcase student life at UWA. Located on ‘The Street’ in EZONE the UWA Motorsport Club spoke to prospective students on how they strive to push the limits of engineering to produce world-class electric race cars, they even had two cars along with them. One of the other clubs featured on the day was the UWA Aerospace Club. This club brought their completed rockets and avionics parts and spoke to prospective students about how they can get involved and design, manufacture, and launch high-powered rockets.

Attendees also had had the opportunity to Meet the Experts in EZONE on Level 1 where academics, alumni and current students talked about courses and careers in engineering. It was great for prospective students to talk to our alumni to gain a deeper insight into Engineering at UWA. We are also thankful that our partners Chevron, Cochlear, Georgiou Group, GPA Engineering, MineEarth, Pritchard Francis, Rio Tinto, Water Corporation and Woodside attended on the day to talk to attendees directly about what it’s like in the field. Throughout the day Rio Tinto showcased its LEGO® excavator in relation to mine site operations, and Chevron demonstrated their live monitoring pages of their plant operations. Special thanks also go to IChemE, the peak international governing body for Chemical Engineering, for lending its voice to our cause. 7 Engineering Staff and Students

We also ran information sessions throughout the day for students to find out what it's like to study Engineering at UWA! These sessions were all extremely popular with over 200 attendees in each of the three sessions. During the information sessions, Head of School Tim Sercombe spoke about how our Engineering program will see them graduate as a qualified and industry-ready engineer with real-world experience in four years. Tim also discussed our hands-on learning and practical experiences on offer which help students build connections and prepare them for a career of the future.

Overall, the day was a success, and it was great to see so many on campus. Thank you to the 1,200 staff and student volunteers who helped promote UWA as a warm and welcoming university with a dynamic campus vibe offering exciting student experiences.
