UWA Sport Acting Head of Sport Kristina Mitsikas welcomed members of UWA’s University Basketball League (UBL) team, UWA Sports Advisory Council Member, John Inverarity and Basketball WA, CEO Rob Clement to the jersey presentation held at Bilya Marlee on Tuesday morning.
The University Basketball League (UBL) is a national university basketball competition first established in 2021. The twelve week competition involves both men’s and women’s divisions with thirteen universities competition across six states in a home and away format.
The ceremony marked the official commencement of the new playing group ahead of the new season. Kristina Mitsikas congratulated the 2023 UBL athletes, coaches and support staff and acknowledged the significance of representing UWA on a national level. Overall, the ceremony signified the pride in celebrating and embedding indigenous culture at UWA Sport.

UWA Student and player in the UBL Men’s squad, Kyiah O’Donohue, then explained the significance of the design to the players, before Noongar Elder Barry Winmar led the group in a traditional Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony. The morning concluded with each coach announcing the squads and presenting the Maali jersey numbers to each player.
UWA Sport are pleased to announce the 2023 UWA Maali squad, set to compete in season 3 of UBL next week.
