The University has partnered with the Nedlands and Claremont RSL to restore the Claremont Teachers College War Memorial ahead of ANZAC Day. The monument, which has stood for nearly a century, honours former UWA students who lost their lives during World Wars I and II.
Despite its historical significance, the memorial has weathered over time, with many of the names now obscured. The restoration has involved the thorough cleaning and treatment of the memorial with a protective coating. The old rosemary hedge that was surrounding the monument has also been removed and will be replanted on the Crawley campus by Friends of the Ground.
The monument, which is made of Donnybrook sandstone and topped with a cross, was initially unveiled on 25 July 1927, coinciding with the dedication of the Menin Gate Memorial in Northern France. A re-dedication ceremony is planned for Sunday 23 July, which will mark 96 years since the original unveiling.
