The highly anticipated UniSport Nationals has landed on Whadjuk region and its promising to be a successful campaign for our Team Maali representatives. As the student athletes, coaches and officials compete on home soil for the first time in over 5 years, Team UWA have stamped their authority on day one of the competition. The feature sports on display included Table Tennis – Singles, Kendo and Women’s Beach Volleyball.

Flying the flag for Team UWA in beach volleyball, the dynamic duo of Keete Kreen and Sophie Alchin set the tone of the competition on day one with comprehensive wins over their rivals beating without breaking a sweat. In windy conditions, the home turf proved to be advantageous to the pair as their opponents were left stunned with blasting serves and powerful spikes. As the only representatives in the beach volleyball competition, Kreen and Alchin round off the day as undefeated heading into the last few regular rounds. The duo will look to continue their strong start to secure a spot in finals. It was a tough day at the office for the Kendo team as the UWA were unable to progress to the later rounds after being eliminated after two rounds.

Aiming to flip the script, Ziqi Wang and Gilbert Chang were able to present a real challenge in the table tennis singles competition. Located in different pools, Wang placed 2 in Pool A and Chang finished 3 in Pool B to qualify into the elimination rounds. Unfortunately, the pair were unable to secure the main draw in the quarter finals. Wang will look to fight for 13th overall whilst Chang will compete for 19th spot to conclude the table tennis singles competition.

The second day of action will involve the beach volleyball pair continuing their success, fencing will commence with 6 athletes including UWA Fencing Vice President – George Dale and lastly taekwondo.
