Under the blue sky, the sun hit the faces of the eager mascots as the racers took their mark on the line. The highly anticipated ‘Mascot Race’ is a feature event of the UniSport Nationals. A long-haul tradition, it was a fight for the ages. The pride of the black swan was on the line and with Tex Garstone at the helm, Team Maali stood a chance to reign supreme over the competition. As the crowd cheered on, it was a closely contested race to the finish line with officials requiring video analysis to determine the winner. After an intense build up, it was announced that Maali clinched the silver medal for UWA.

The valiant effort of Maali lifted the atmosphere and the UWA team absorbed the energy to bring the heat to the competition. Water Polo – Men’s secured a win over University of Technology Sydney (10 – 9) before their undefeated run ended at the hands of Australian Catholic University. The Indoor Volleyball – Men’s team secured a win over Flinders University with UWA Team 1 remaining undefeated in a tough pool of competitors.

The dominance continued in Hockey as the women finished the regular rounds undefeated with convincing wins against the University of Tasmania, University of Newcastle and the University of New South Wales. The men will look to replicate the dream run of the women. They remain on top with victory over Macquarie University and a physical game against Edith Cowan University (5-0). The Hockey – Men’s team will face their toughest opponent in their pool against Melbourne University in the battle to finish top of the pool.

The swan song of the dynamic duo came to end as Alchin and Kreen went down in an incredible fight for the title in the Women’s Beach Volleyball. As the only representatives, the pair took home the silverware and the hearts of several fans.

The hottest day of the competition certainly tested the Maali athletes. The Rugby 7’s competition saw the women gain one win out of three games against the University of New England. Similarly, the men’s ratio was a duplicate with only one win and two losses. The Badminton competition began with the Men’s team securing two wins over the University of Queensland and Deakin University before going down to Curtin University in a low scoring affair.

Day four brought joy to the Men’s Basketball team, securing their first win over University of Canberra in convincing fashion. The Maali football teams remain winless on the first day of competition. Struggling to find rhythm, both sides will look to change their fortune on home soil. The football action continues on Wednesday with each side looking to build momentum and get a win.

The roaring sun will be in action on day five with the Rowing finals on display. Two UWA teams in the Men’s Eight – Rowing will be contesting for the Oxford Cambridge Cup at Champion Lakes. The Women’s Four – Rowing will also be a highlight with UWA Team 1 lead Louisa Jackson and UWA Team 2 lead by Rebecca Pretorius.
