The ultimate showdown will take place on Ngunnawal Country with the UWA Maali Sevens jetting off for the final tournament of the University Women's Sevens Series in Canberra.

The University Women’s Sevens series is a tournament for senior female rugby sevens players representing universities from around Australia. With the support of Rugby Australia, the 2022 season will consists of three tournaments hosted in Adelaide, Newcastle, and Canberra throughout October. The third and final tournament hosted by the University of Canberra on Ngunnawal country will consist of six regular round games before teams enter the play offs.

The head coach of the UWA Maali Sevens team has admitted that the rigorous travelling component effected the teams performance in Newcastle.

“Just having one training session before flying out to Sydney and then travelling to Newcastle resulted in a slow performance from the team”.

Dylan Parsons, Head Coach, UWA Maali Sevens

The women remained resilient and bounced back to finish the second tournament strongly. UWA Maali produced a cohesive game play that was united which installed a lot of belief in the squad heading into this weekend. Parsons is also hoping to carry this momentum into the last tournament with the side playing three games on the Saturday to begin the tournament.

The new challenge for the coaches will be the introduction of a new line up ahead of the final tournament. The travelling squad will have to work together to build strong combinations to ensure another finals birth in Canberra.

UWA Maali Sevens coaching staff are focused on building the future of the game with majority of the squad having at least competed in one of the tournaments.

“It’s a real positive for future programs to have players that have experience the demands of this series”
