The UWA Maali have started their 2022 University Basketball League (UBL) campaign with a double header against the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) Spartans and competition newcomers, the Adelaide University (AU) Waatu.
On Tuesday, the Maali went head-to-head against the Spartans. The men's game was a close contest, sent into overtime before the Spartans came out on top 89-83. The Maali had a strong start, getting out to a 16 point lead thanks to a massive team effort, before USC capitalised on their opportunities to bring themselves back in to the game. However, it wasn't without a fight, with the Maali attempting a whopping 39 three pointers. The women were also defeated by the Spartans 55-33. Zoe Shanahan was a top performer in the Maali side, making 50% of her three pointer attempts, with the team achieving a 75% free throw accuracy.
Wednesday saw the AU Waatu take to the court against the Maali, with the Maali women emerging with a narrow 2-point victory of 62-60. The Maali's consistency in two-pointers proved to be their saving grace in this game, with Jenna Teasdale, Mya Dimanlig and Zoe Shanahan making 43 of the team's 62 points. In the men's game, the Waatu's strong three-pointer abilities challenged the Maali's defensive efforts, resulting in AU quickly pulling away. Despite an early comeback from the Maali, helped along by Rhys Hohenstein and Nicholas Floyd, they ultimately lost to the Waatu 92-71.
These results leave the Maali women in 4th place, and the men in 9th place following the conclusion of the first week of competition.
The Maali are this week on a bye, before another home double header against the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) and The University of Sydney. Check out all the upcoming fixtures at sport.uwa.edu.au.
