The annual UWA Sports Awards, held on Thursday 21 October at the University Club, celebrated the achievements of UWA clubs and student athletes over the past year.
The afternoon, presented by UWA Sport General Manager Ian Fitzpatrick, was attended by a variety of members of the UWA Sport community.
Special guests included Deputy Vice-Chancellor David Sadler, Chair of the UWA Sport Advisory Council John Inverarity, UWA Sports Council President Katheirne Sparrow, and UWA Director of Student Life Chris Massey.
Club Service Awards were received by Taneesha Stallbaum (UWA Outdoor Club), Kenji Li Hee Cheong (UWA Futsal Club), George Dale (UWA Fencing Club), Ben Chamberlain (UWA Athletics Club), and Isabella Emery (UWA Boat Club).
Club Letters were awarded to Mitchell Rohser (UWA Cricket Club), Perry Allen (UWA Cricket Club), Sophie Rowe (UWA Boat Club), Alistair Cook (UWA Underwater Club), Bronwyn Cox (UWA Boat Club), Conor Hughes (UWA Rugby Club), Nina Kennedy (UWA Athletics Club), Louise Soia (UWA Athletics Club), Elizaveta Parnova (UWA Athletics Club), Ella Pardy (UWA Athletics Club), Brianna Throssell (UWA West Coast Swimming Club) and Zac Incerti (UWA West Coast Swimming Club).
The 25th anniversary of the UWA Table Tennis Club was also celebrated with the presentation of a plaque, and a number of sporting bursary winners were also recognised. UBL Women's Most Valuable Player Chloe Forster was also recognised for her outstanding contribution to the UWA Maali in 2021.
Coach of the Year was awarded to Will Stibbs of the UWA Cricket Club in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the club in the areas of performance, participation and inclusivity over the past 12 months.
Will has been a central figure in he UWA Cricket Club since becoming Director of Cricket/ Head Coach in January 2013. In the last decade he has been a pivotal figure in the modernisation of the club in the areas of on field performance, player development programs, recruiting structures, coach development, liaison with the WACA and Cricket Australia, livestreaming and sponsorship deals. Further to this, Will has been tireless in his pursuit of creating a club environment that is collegial and encourages and empowers players to take on positions of responsibility.
The Champion Club award was this year awarded to the UWA Boat Club for excellence in the areas oa participation, performance and inclusion over the past 12 months. The UWA Boat Club provides a wide variety of programs for people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds. The club's members show extraordinary pride and passion for UWA Boat Club which is seen through their commitment and dedication to training, competition, coaching, volunteering, coordinating and mentoring.
The 2021 Sports Star of the Year was awarded to student athlete and two-time Olympic swimmer Tamsin Cook.
Tamsin recently returned from Tokyo clutching another medal, contributing to the most successful Australian Olympic swim team. After retiring from swimming in 2017 following a car accident, the impact of COVID-19 saw Tamsin get back into the pool in 2020. Just six months after of returning to elite training she recorded a career best time in the 400m event at the Australian Trials in June, booking her a spot to Tokyo for the Olympics.
Tamsin now joins more than 50 students in receiving the award. UWA Sport thanks Convocation for their ongoing support and contribution to this award.
