UWA Maali claim double victory against USC Spartans

11 May 2021 | 1 min

The UWA Maali travelled to the Sunshine Coast to compete in their second fixture of the University Basketball League (UBL) season against the USC Spartans, following the postponement of their home double-header.

The Maali women’s team exhibited an improvement on their performance in their first match, with a more even scoring contribution amongst the team. The ability of the Maali to hold their ground against the physical approach of the Spartans proved to be a strength of the team. Following their extremely narrow lost in their last match the Maali were determined to win and ended up on top by a respectable 12 points.

The men’s game was extremely close throughout, with the game hanging in the balance in the final minutes. With only 19 seconds on the clock, UWA’s Chuatwech Reath scored a 3-pointer, putting the Maali in the lead by only one point. This lead was extended by Kiyah O'Donohue, who hit 2 free throws with only 4 seconds left, snagging the team a 3 point victory.

Despite the long day of travel, the Maali made the most of the match and did the UWA community proud with their well-deserved wins. The teams are now preparing to travel to Sydney next week for a double-header against The University of Sydney and UTS, before heading back home for another double-header against the remaining Victorian teams.
