UWA’s University Basketball League (UBL) side, the UWA Maali, have been officially presented with their playing jerseys ahead of their first match against Victoria University on Wednesday April 20.
The team were presented with their jerseys at a morning ceremony outside Bilya Marlee and were addressed by UWA Director of Student Life and UniSport Australia board member Chris Massey, as well as UWA Sport General Manager Ian Fitzpatrick. Noongar Elder Neville Collard and UWA Student Aaron Sutton shared the Indigenous dreamtime story that served as the inspiration for the design of the jersey, the story of the black swan, before Dr Richard Walley led the team in a traditional Noongar smoking ceremony.
The University Basketball League (UBL) is one of the newest pathways to elite Australian sport, created by UniSport Australia with the support of Basketball Australia and the respective State Basketball Associations.
UWA Maali’s first match of the season against Victoria University will be held at UWA Sport on Wednesday April 20 and will feature both the men’s and women’s teams. For more information on team fixtures, visit the UWA Sport website.
