Name: Dr Jo Hawkins, UWA Innovation Quarter
Achievement: Dr Jo Hawkins, UWA Innovation Quarter Manager, has been included in the Business News 40under40 class of 2021. The awards celebrate Western Australia’s top young business talent across a diverse mix of sectors, from finance and health, to law and community leadership.
Name: Jesse Taylor and Georgia Taylor-Berry, UWA School of Architecture
Achievement: UWA Master of Architecture graduates, Jesse and Georgia, won the inaugural $30,000 Sculpture by the Sea Artists Award (supported by the Minderoo Foundation) for their sculpture Interacting Fences, a ‘social distance’-inspired sculpture displayed at Sculpture by the Sea in Cottesloe. The project was executed remotely and is a comment on the distance and division that currently exists within our culture.
Name: Dr Deborah Schoen, UWA School of Allied Health
Achievement: Dr Schoen won the Metropolitan Bush Champion at the 2021 Rural Health Awards for her commitment to delivering high quality podiatric care for rural populations. The Awards recognise health professionals who have dedicated their careers to caring for rural communities in Western Australia. Dr Schoen educates non-podiatry practitioners about the ‘high risk foot’ implementing guidelines to reduce rates of amputation in rural and Aboriginal people resulting from late presentation and inadequate foot care.
Name: Adjunct Professor Kevin Kenneally, UWA School of Agriculture
Achievement: Adjunct Professor Kenneally was awarded the Serventy Conservation Award at a ceremony in the NSW Parliament for his promotion and advancement of nature studies and wildlife conservation in WA and Australia. His research has focused on the Kimberley and Top End of Australia, documenting and advising the government on the region’s conservation and wildlife.
Name: Students Robert Colbourne and Josephine Liantono
Achievement: UWA Master of Engineering students Robert Colbourne and Josephine Liantono have been awarded an Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM) Sir Frank Espie/Rio Tinto Leadership Award and Premium Scholarship through the Education Endowment Fund Scholarship program. The scholarships aim to support students who are emerging industry leaders, ensuring they are offered meaningful opportunities to develop professionally.
Name: Nurul Hud Azman, Lyana Ibrahim O Mahat, Thanh Thao Pham and David Morgan Carr, UWA School of Design
Achievement: UWA architecture students Nurul, Lyana, Thanh and David have placed second in an international design competition with their model for COVID-safe outdoor seating. Their ‘Ribbons of Growth’ design is intended to support increased physical distancing and meet the varying needs of individuals.
