Examining car driver and cyclist interactions

Car drivers and cyclists often share the roads and their interaction can cause friction between the two parties. What exactly contributes to such encounters is the focus of a new study run by researchers at UWA.

Lead researcher Dr Laura Fruhen, from the School of Psychological Science, said the study would investigate some of the factors that may play a role in car drivers’ and cyclists’ interactions on the roads, from the perspective of car drivers.

The research team is looking for WA drivers who are willing to complete a 15-minute survey via the project website.

Anyone who is living in WA, holds a current driving licence and is over the age of 18 can take part. Survey questions concern the participant’s typical behaviour towards cyclists when driving, as well as their thoughts about a number of related issues.

“It is really important that we can recruit as many WA drivers as possible so that we can identify the most central issues that are at play,” Dr Fruhen said.

“The insights generated by this study can inform initiatives and changes that can improve the interactions of cyclists and car drivers on the roads.

“Ultimately, this research will help make roads safer and more enjoyable for cyclists and car drivers alike.”
