Indian Ocean Marine Research Centre

The Indian Ocean Marine Research Centre (IOMRC) provides innovative and effective solutions to challenges facing the world's oceans. Built for the UWA Oceans Institute, the IOMRC brings together more than 300 marine scientists across disciplines including biodiversity, fishing, tourism, Indigenous engagement, climate change, oceanography and conservation.

The $62 million facility is jointly supported by the Australian Institute of Marine Science, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation and the Western Australian Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development.

IOMRC is home to UWA-led research groups including the Centre for Offshore Foundation Systems, which houses the National Geotechnical Centrifuge facility as well as the Ocean Gliders group. These research groups also work closely with the Wave Energy Research Centre.

Ocean Gliders facility

The Ocean Gliders facility at the IOMRC is used to research and build remotely controlled autonomous underwater vehicles designed to undertake measurements from shelf and boundary currents in Australian waters.

The facility supports the research undertaken to develop these underwater vehicles, furthering the frontiers of knowledge in ocean science and technology.

The Ocean Gliders facility hosts the Australian National Facility for Ocean Gliders as part of Australia's Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS). UWA is working with the wider IMOS team for its oceanography research, which will continue to transform the decisions we make surrounding our oceans and ecosystems.

National Geotechnical Centrifuge Facility

The National Geotechnical Centrifuge Facility at the Centre for Offshore Foundation Systems (COFS) is among the most active in the world, providing crucial geotechnical data and prediction models to enable the development of offshore solutions.

COFS currently operates the only geotechnical centrifuge facility in Australia, and is the only geotechnical modelling facility in the world with three centrifuges. COFS produces reputable, world-class testing, with exceptional industry collaboration.
