Centre for Sleep Science
Did you know we spend a third of our lives asleep? Waking after sufficient and healthy sleep makes us feel refreshed and rested but unfortunately this is not the case for many individuals who have sleep disorders, poor sleep habits or who do shift work.
Research conducted at the Centre for Sleep Science at The University of Western Australia aims to identify the causes of poor sleep as well as potential therapies that might help treat these issues.
The Centre for Sleep Science boasts five bedrooms equipped with state-of-the-art sleep recording and analysis equipment for laboratory-based research sleep studies. The Centre also contains a range of training and seminar rooms and offices for staff and students and is the base for a number of postgraduate sleep training courses offered through the University.
Our work
UWA Winthrop Professor Peter Eastwood's particular focus of research is both to better understand the reasons why humans get sleep apnoea and also to improve treatments for sleep apnoea. This video details some of the sleep disorder research being done at The University of Western Australia.
Education programs and community outreach
The Centre for Sleep Science is committed to clinical and research sleep issues and offers a variety of educational opportunities, many of which standout as being the only sleep courses available in Australia.
Staff members regularly speak to community groups about sleep health, such as schools, industry and universities.
The Centre for Sleep Science does not offer clinical therapies or diagnosis to the general public as the Centre is wholly research-based. Anyone in the community looking to investigate any sleep issues that they may be experiencing are encouraged to go to the Sleep Health Foundation for further information, or to speak to their medical practitioner about their concerns.
Our staff and students
Most of our research staff work at the Centre as well our clinical partner at Sit Charles Gairdner Hospital, at the WA Sleep and Respiratory Institute (WASDRI).
