UWA launches uni pathway programs

In response to the evolving nature of higher education The University of Western Australia is enabling students with the ambition and potential to succeed at university to participate in new free and flexible university preparation programs.

The UWA Pathway Programs prepare future students for entry to one of the University’s bachelor’s degrees and will launch in semester two this year for students who have graduated from high school and mature-age students, followed by high school students in 2027.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor Education and Student Experience, Professor Guy Littlefair said the preparation programs expanded opportunities for students from diverse backgrounds.

“These programs support education in our community by strengthening academic literacy, numeracy, critical thinking and field‑specific knowledge,” Professor Littlefair said.

“These are not one-size-fits-all enabling courses – they are tailored and purpose-built to a specific field of study.

“Small classes and tailored support will give students the skills they need to step into their chosen course with confidence.”

The programs have been developed in response to a growing trend across Western Australia for students to choose degrees that offer clear career pathways, such as engineering and medicine, and specialised health-related courses including nursing.

The pathway programs are UWA Catalyst for students who want to make their mark in science and technology; UWA Thrive for the next generation of healthcare professionals and aspiring nurses; and UWA Headway for inquisitive, adaptable and creative students with interests from arts and business to education, music, design, communications and social work.

UWA already offers the UWA Aboriginal Orientation Course for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander students ready to take their next step towards a university degree.

“By making higher education more accessible we’re giving people the opportunity to thrive in a university environment,” Professor Littlefair said.

Students can apply online to start their university preparation course in July here.
