The Geraldton JMO Society (GeMOS) was established in 2022 by a group of passionate junior doctors who recognised the need for a supportive community to address the unique challenges faced by interns, resident medical officers, and registrars throughout their prevocational training journey at Geraldton Regional Hospital.
Current GeMOS president Dr Jafer Moayad reveals more about the group...
What does GeMOS typically do?
Since its inception, GeMOS has focused on advocating for the wellbeing and professional growth of members. Its duties and responsibilities include negotiating with key stakeholders at the WA Country Health Service regarding working conditions like rostering, leave, overtime, and bullying. The Society also organises workshops, regular social and networking events, and provides ample exciting opportunities for personal and professional development.
How big is the membership?
The GeMOS committee has seven active members, all with their own unique roles and responsibilities. They actively explore options to expand their membership base, but their main responsibility is to advocate for and represent all junior doctors working at Geraldton Hospital. The group has recently had a change of leadership and expect to welcome more members as the hospital (and staff) continue to expand.

Why did you join the GeMOS leadership team?
I joined because I wanted to make a positive impact on the local community of junior doctors at Geraldton. It’s such an exciting opportunity to advocate for your peers, address common challenges, and contribute to a supportive environment — especially since our decision-makers at Geraldton are so friendly, supportive, understanding, professional, and amazing to work with. In this context, being part of the leadership team is a deeply rewarding experience that allows me to solve problems, implement new initiatives, and work towards enhancing the wellbeing and professional development of our junior doctors.
How does GeMOS advocate on behalf of junior doctors if issues arise with problematic supervision, intimidation in the workplace, or industrial relations matters during their employment in the region?
GeMOS acts as a crucial advocate for junior doctors facing issues such as problematic supervision, workplace intimidation, rostering and leave issues, and industrial relations concerns. We provide a 100 per cent confidential platform for our juniors to voice their concerns, and we work very closely with key decision-makers and stakeholders, senior medical staff, hospital administration, and WACHS executives when issues arise, to deliver prompt resolutions that uphold the welfare of our juniors. Additionally, the society offers resources and guidance to navigate complex situations, providing support and representation as needed.
If you were asked to write a review about GeMOS, what would it say?
GeMOS is an essential support network for junior doctors at Geraldton Hospital. The society provides a welcoming community, fostering connections and offering valuable resources for personal and professional growth. GeMOS excels in advocating for its members' wellbeing, addressing workplace challenges, and enhancing the overall experience of junior doctors. The leadership's dedication to creating a positive and inclusive environment is evident in the society's activities and initiatives. GeMOS is a cornerstone for junior doctors seeking support, advocacy, camaraderie, and a sense of belonging.

What would a junior doctor visiting the Mid West be missing out on if they chose not to connect with GeMOS?
A valuable support system – across academic, professional and social spheres. Without connecting with us, you would miss out on access to critical resources, guidance on navigating workplace challenges, and the opportunity to make your voice heard. Geraldton is, at the time of writing, a non-tertiary hospital in a small town. This means that by connecting with us, your voice will absolutely be heard, and your concerns taken seriously. Additionally, you might miss out on exciting networking opportunities, social events, career development opportunities, and the chance to build lasting friendships with fellow juniors.
What is the best way for a junior doctor to get in touch with GeMOS?
Contact the society via email or attend a midterm, end-of-term, or sponsored event. GeMOS has a strong presence at regular JMO teachings on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1pm to 2pm.
