WASO’s ATAR Unlocked program, delivered in 2022 in partnership with The University of Western Australia’s Conservatorium of Music, will be presented online for the first time, increasing accessibility for secondary music students across WA.

“In 2022 we are combining the talent of WASO’s musicians and educators, with leading industry partners, the University of Western Australia’s Conservatorium of Music, to bring the concert hall into the classroom," said Alena Tompkins, WASO’s Executive Manager, Community Engagement.

"This ATAR Unlocked program is part of WASO’s extensive year-round commitment to education, as we help to create a bright future for music in WA.”

WASO’s ATAR Unlocked program invites teachers and students to join expert educators and musicians to demystify the ATAR syllabus. The program is designed to support participants in their ATAR journey through workshops, concert performances and a suite of online resources.

“Music is a powerful tool in our society. UWA is pleased to come alongside WASO to collaborate on this year’s offerings to support teachers and their students in making music.” - Professor Alan Lourens, Head, UWA Conservatorium of Music

WASO has presented the ATAR Unlocked program every year since 2013, with 2022 marking the first year the program is to be delivered online. The online delivery will enable more West Australian students access to the resources than ever before.

ATAR Unlocked commences with a UWA ATAR Insights Symposium. UWA Academics will present engaging recorded sessions including ‘Performance Tips and Tricks’ and ‘Demystify Theory’ to help students and ensure they are prepared and confident in their studies, with a particular focus on the Western Art Music ATAR syllabus.

The Symposium is followed by the 2022 ATAR Designated Works Concert, which sees UWA Conservatorium of Music students perform side-by-side with WASO musicians on the Perth Concert Hall stage in another unique recorded presentation.

Conductor Jen Winley leads the orchestra in a performance of selected movements by Beethoven and Tchaikovsky that form part of the ATAR syllabus, and joins Presenter Peter Moore to discuss historical and cultural perspectives and detailed analysis of the works.

A suite of symposium workshops and supporting resources have been developed by UWA Academics, which alongside WASO’s pre-concert learning resources, join the 90-minute concert recording to complete the package suitable for both students and teachers.

“We are delighted at the early response from all kinds of schools across WA. Many teachers have told us how excited they are to share the material with their students individually, while others are creating satellite events in their own halls to stream the content for large cohorts.” said Ms Tompkins.

Previously costing $15 per student, in another move to increase accessibility and reflect the digital delivery of the program, it costs just $10 per student in 2022.  Material can be viewed by participating schools on demand from Friday 1 April.

ATAR Designated Works Concert - BEETHOVEN Piano Concerto No.3 in c minor op.37, mvt I and TCHAIKOVSKY Symphony No.5 in e minor op.64, mvt I & III are delivered by WASO in partnership with the UWA Conservatorium of Music and available online from Friday, April 1, 2022.
