Name: Deanna Mill, School of Allied Health
Achievement: PhD student Ms Mill has been appointed to The Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (PSA) National Board as the Early Career Pharmacists Board Director. She has acquired a unique breadth of skills and experience, having worked in rural, metropolitan, hospital, community, teaching and research settings.
Name: Julia Kay, School of Architecture
Achievement: The UWA Master of Architecture graduate’s company ‘Great Wrap’ is a finalist in the Sustainable Design category for The Design Files awards. ‘Great Wrap’ is the only Australian-made compostable stretch wrap. It performs exactly like conventional cling wrap, except it’s made from food waste and breaks down into carbon and water in less than 180 days. The Sustainable Design category seeks to award one outstanding Australian sustainable designed product or initiative with positive environmental outcomes. The winner will be announced on September 30.
Name: Dr Guoping Hu, School of Engineering
Achievement: Dr Hu was awarded WA Young Professional Engineer of the Year at the Professional Engineer of the Year Awards for his outstanding achievements in the field. Dr Hu has managed and conducted many research and development projects that have been upscaled, most notably projects in carbon capture demonstration, hydrometallurgical process, and ILZ methane enrichment technology. He is passionate about using his skills to promote innovation, collaboration, sustainability and engineering leadership for good.
Name: Emerita Professor Lynette Abbott, School of Agriculture and Environment, The UWA Institute of Agriculture
Achievement: Professor Abbott was named the inaugural recipient of the prestigious General Jeffrey Soil Health Award, as a leading voice in the field of soil health. The award recognises an individual’s work to champion, improve and educate others in soil health. Professor Abbott conducted pioneering research into symbiotic soil fungi in agriculture and disturbed natural environments during an academic career that has spanned more than five decades.
