WA’s top scoring ATAR student and Beazley medallist chooses to study at UWA

WA’s top scoring ATAR secondary student for 2020 and Beazley Medallist Josh Green, 18, from Shenton Park, has chosen to study a Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours), majoring in physics, at The University of Western Australia. 

The Beazley Medal: Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) recognises the secondary student with the highest examination marks across five ATAR courses in Year 12. Josh achieved the maximum ATAR score of 99.95.

As the Beazley Medal winner Josh has been awarded and has accepted the UWA Fogarty Foundation Beazley Medallist Scholarship valued at $80,000 maximum for the duration of his studies, which extends from his undergraduate to his postgraduate studies if he chooses. 

In partnership with St Catherine’s Residential College, Josh has also been awarded the St Catherine’s Residential Scholarship to support accommodation costs for the duration of his undergraduate degree. 

Josh said he was very excited to be starting study at UWA this Semester and learning about physics and philosophy, where his passion lies.

“I think the new Double Major in the Frontier Physics at UWA, where you learn about the most intricate and challenging experiments known to us will be fascinating.”

“I’m very interested in philosophy generally and I think physics is very much interconnected with philosophy in a really interesting way.

“UWA offers a lot of research programs and is very involved in dark matter, the science of gravitational waves, and research that is really interesting and I think that’s where I will find myself.”

Josh also won a General Exhibition, a Subject Exhibition in Mathematics Methods, a Certificate of Excellence in Literature, Mathematics Methods and Modern History and a Certificate of Distinction.

The Beazley Medal is named after Kim Beazley, a former teacher and Federal Minister for Education.
