On Tuesday 20 April, the UWA Maali competed in their first matches of the University Basketball League (UBL) season against the visiting Victoria University Vultures at the UWA Recreation and Fitness Centre.

In the women’s match, the Maali broke away with a 9-point lead in the first half of the first quarter, which eroded to the team trailing by 2 points at the first break. UWA continued to trail throughout the rest of the game, however Victoria University rarely managed to attain more than a 10-point lead. The margin began to close in the final quarter, and with only four minutes left on the clock the scores were tied. However, Victoria University managed to break away and finished the game with a score of 67 to the Maali’s 62.

In the men’s game, UWA again took the lead before Victoria University caught up. The scores remained incredibly close throughout the match. Although the Maali were trailing behind, Victoria University were unable to take a comfortable lead, and competition remained fierce. With only 3 minutes remaining in the final quarter, the UWA Maali were finally able to take the lead. This lead widened to a maximum of 7 points with 30 seconds to go, and although Victoria University closed the gap, the UWA Maali came out on top with a score of 86 to 85.

Congratulations to both teams for their performance in Tuesday’s matches.

UWA will be hosting two more UBL home games this season, and we’re calling on the UWA community to get behind the team.
