UWA graduate named intern pharmacist of the year

A pharmacy graduate from The University of Western Australia has today been named Intern Pharmacist of the Year on World Pharmacists Day,beating a strong field of intern pharmacists around the country.

Wint Ye Phu, 23, from Piara Waters, won the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (PSA) Intern Pharmacy of the Year award for her dedication to patient outcomes and leadership and innovation in the field.

Sponsored by global pharmaceutical reference guide MIMS, Ms Phu will receive $5,000 in prize money to put towards educational training.

Ms Phu is currently completing her internship at Market City Pharmacy in Canning Vale, Western Australia.

She has been fundamental in helping to develop the Facebook group ‘The Mindful Pharmacist’ helping other pharmacists, interns, students and health care staff learn a different drug of the day for 100 days.

Ms Phu said she was greatly honoured to be selected Intern Pharmacist of the Year.

“Winning this award is one of the best things that has happened to me in 2020, amidst the global pandemic and starting my journey into pharmacy,” Ms Phu said.

“I feel as if I have been recognised for doing what I love and it means a lot, especially in the early stages of my career.

“Despite the challenges of operating in a pandemic, the support from my fellow pharmacists and colleagues has made every bit of my intern year enjoyable and exciting.”

UWA Head of Pharmacy Assistant Professor Liza Seubert congratulated Ms Phu on her achievements and innovative approach to the field.

“Wint Ye has shown remarkable development as a professional pharmacist, particularly in a year where COVID-19 has created a number of learning and communication challenges,” Dr Seubert said.

“She has shown an incredible commitment to patient care and demonstrated impressive leadership among her colleagues. I wish her all the best as she rises through the ranks throughout her career.”
