Awards and Achievements - August 2020

The University of Western Australia has a continual roll call of awards, scholarships and prizes presented to staff and students.

To recognise these achievements, an article is published on the UWA news page on the website and in UWA Forwardon the first week of every month. If you know of great awards or achievements across the University please email [email protected]

Name: Mohammed Bennamoun, UWA School of Computer Science and Software Engineering
Achievement: Professor Bennamoun has been awarded a WA Defence Science Centre’s Collaborative Research grant for a collaborative project with the Defence Science and Technology Group and Remsense. The project will develop a visual positional system to localise targets on a 3D map using a single drone image.

Name: Monroe Sydney Masa, UWA School of Design 
Achievement: Master of Architecture student Monroe was awarded an honourable mention in the Legendary Bird Home 2020 international architecture competition for his project ‘Villa Columbarium’. His project was one of one of six honourable mentions selected from 92 submitted projects. The jury considered his submission was ‘of an exceptional standard’.

Name: Alec James and Nicholas Thuys, UWA School of Design 
Achievement: UWA School of Design architecture students Alec and Nicholas were recently recognised in the inFILL Housing Competition run by Slavin Architects in association with the Western Australian Alliance to End Homelessness (WAAEH). They took first place with their project ’13 Mouat’, Connor Simpson and Justin Katsumata Yu were awarded third place for their project ‘Mum’s House’ and Qingyin Yang and Sonita Hean received a commendation for their entry. 

Name: Zoë Sydney, UWA School of Design 
Achievement: UWA Fine Arts student Zoë Sydney has been selected as one of 40 finalists from more than 750 entries for this year’s Lester Prize at the Art Gallery of Western Australia. UWA alumni Rachelle Dusting and Melissa Clements and Fine Arts lecturer Andy Quilty were also shortlisted among an additional 45 semi-finalists selected for the Lester Prize Salon.
