Top mathematician awarded prestigious fellowship

Professor Enrico Valdinoci from UWA’s School of Physics, Mathematics and Computing has been awarded a prestigious national fellowship.

The Laureate Fellowship, awarded by the Australian Research Council is among only 17 presented nationally, providing up to $3.5 million in funding to support research activities over a five-year period.

Professor Valdinoci was awarded the fellowship for his project Minimal surfaces, free boundaries and partial differential equations.

“The fellowship will allow me to organise conferences and workshops, and consolidate an international research network in which leading experts, talented early career researchers and promising students interact dynamically in a very collaborative environment to produce high-quality, broad-spectrum mathematics,” said Professor Valdinoci.

The new research team will provide an ideal training environment for students and post doctoral researchers, offering opportunities to develop strategic fields of knowledge.

“The fellowship will allow the strengthening of a future research team, which aims at striving for excellence, producing new results which we hope will remain as landmarks in the field of mathematics.”

Professor Valdinoci’s project focuses on applying advanced mathematics to solve challenging research questions in the key strategic area of international science, enhancing Australia as a world leader in the field of mathematical science and analysis.

“In the last 10 years or so, I became very interested in problems focused on ‘nonlocal’ equations, which model concrete situations in which the ‘far-away’ interactions are significant and important.

“I think these new discoveries can be very telling for a farsighted analysis of the complex world in which we live.”

The Australian Laureate Fellowships aim to attract world-class researchers to key positions in Australia by creating incentives and providing opportunities to apply their talents.
