Social and Political Development

How does the world generate and respond to change?

Scholars from across the social sciences spectrum study how we live, govern and respond to old and new challenges in the contemporary world. We explore the environmental, the technological, the social, the political and beyond. In this research area, our goal is to understand, explain and predict the ramifications of changing social and political contexts in our dynamic and globalised world.

At the UWA School of Social Sciences, we’re passionate about responsibly tackling the world’s social and political challenges. We ask what are the sources of social cohesion and the drivers of disruption. We explore solutions to complex and ever-shifting social, economic, cultural, religious and geopolitical problems. We interrogate identity, behaviour, institutions and texts. We explore these phenomena across different scales, from the local to the global, and consider the relationships between them as they pertain to the past, the present and the future.
