Sophie Stewart discusses how we can reform the justice system to create safer communities, healthier families, and save money.
About the event
WA has the highest disproportionate rates of Aboriginal incarceration in the nation. We spend over a billion dollars on our current justice system each year- yet recidivism rates show us it is fundamentally failing to rehabilitate offenders. Sophie Stewart will take us on the journey of Social Reinvestment WA, as they develop and advocate for a smarter approach to justice in WA that effectively responds to the underlying causes of offending, and how we can all be part of creating it.
Sophie Stewart is a 25 year old BA(Hons) graduate from UWA where she majored in Political Science and International Relations. Sophie has spent the last four years as the first Campaign Coordinator for Social Reinvestment WA, building a coalition of 25 non-profits and running a campaign on ending the over-representation of Aboriginal people in custody in WA. She has led development for the first Justice Reinvestment site in WA, coordinated state-wide advocacy to reform legislation to end imprisonment for unpaid fines and executive-produced the Stories from the Inside podcast. She founded Swim for Refugees in 2014 and, each season, leads 40 volunteers to teach over 60 people from refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds how to swim.
This talk is part of the Disruptive Social Ideas series which features innovative researchers and practitioners exploring new ideas and evidence-informed solutions to challenging social problems.
