As an honours student in science communication, you will consolidate your research skills by conducting an original, individual research project with supervision. You will recieved training in research methodologies and writing as well completing a written thesis. There are a variety of projects available using both qualitative and quantitative methods, working within the University with external partners such as the Zoo or Scitech. An honours degree is valued by science communication employers who want evidence of critical thinking and research skills, particularly in roles that require program evaluation.

About the course

Science Communication provides you with experience in new media, written, oral and visual presentations, science performance and working with industry experts. This major teaches you to communicate effectively with audiences ranging from children to scientists. Classes are a mixture of lectures and tutorials, complementing learned theory with discussions, demonstrations and group work. You'll develop a Science Communication portfolio including writing, videos, podcasts, professional reports, presentations, exhibits, posters and websites. In a practicum you're placed with an organisation to enhance your networking and employment opportunities. UWA is one of only two universities that offer undergraduate Science Communication programs in Australia. This major must be taken with another science major, providing you with scientific knowledge and highly marketable communication skills.

I chose Science Communication as my second major because it's different from the usual science units. It's a bit of a creative outlet for me. Instead of the usual reports and exams, I get to write articles, design websites, even create my own science show that I'll perform for primary school kids. 

The fact that I'm learning practical work skills is just icing on top. The group work is always interesting because you'll get to work with people from all over the place. There are quite a few exchange students in UWA and working with them is always an experience.

UWA is internationally recognised, so the degree I earn here will translate to anywhere I choose to work.

My experience with the lecturers have been really good. They are always there if you need help and they convey the information in a purposeful ways. They even help you with other units, for example, I interviewed my Science Communication lecturer for a journalism unit I was doing and she was very happy to help me and gave me some valuable advice. Through my studies I did a lot of lab work and other practical work such as making videos and podcasts. I even got some research experience with one of the researchers at the university which gave me some great insights on what research is really like.

I am currently doing a work practicum unit at Lab West which gives me a good insight into a work place. I gained a lot of hands on experience in different roles and the practicum gave me a good idea of what's expected in that field and prepared me for my future outside of university. If you are planning on studying at UWA, I would definitely recommend considering studying a double degree. It doesn't take any extra time and you'll get twice the qualification.

UWA offers opportunities across my degree where I can apply myself in my field of study and get to know people who are experts in the field. The UWA course structure allows me to explore different options before I graduate and leave my degree with the skills necessary to join my chosen fields in the workforce. For example, I have reconsidered my degree and instead of going straight into physics research after I graduate, I might want to do scientific journalism or science communication straight up. UWA has a lot to offer in terms of clubs and campus culture, and I encourage everyone to explore it all and have fun studying their degree.
