Roles and responsibilities
To qualify as a teacher of English to speakers of other languages:
Step 1
Complete any undergraduate bachelor’s course {Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Design, Bachelor of Science or the Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours)} with a major in English and Cultural Studies as your first degree.
Step 2
Complete the postgraduate Master of Teaching - Coursework (Secondary) to qualify as a teacher of English to speakers of other languages.

As a specialist in this area, you will:
- assess the extent of language difficulties in students for whom English is a second language
- teach students individually and in small groups out of the regular classroom, and assist students within normal classroom settings
- teach students English language skills using a variety of methods including lecture and visual demonstration
- provide assistance to other classroom teachers by designing special teaching programs for students with English language difficulties
- design and produce teaching materials and adapt existing materials
- prepare course outlines and goals
- assign lessons, correct homework, and prepare and grade exams
- analyse, record and report progress to regular classroom teachers, parents and students
