Roles and responsibilities
Sport in Australia has traditionally been administered by unpaid volunteers.
Since sport has become more complex and business-like, more clubs, associations and organisations are appointing trained professional administrators.
Sports administrators:
- talk to clients and conduct research to determine their needs
- develop programs and services that meet client needs
- consult widely to develop short- and long-term business plans for their sport
- supervise the design, planning and maintenance of sport and recreation facilities
- make sure facilities conform to fire and other safety standards
- plan and organise sporting events
- supervise office, facility and/or program staff
- identify staff training needs
- coordinate the business activities of a sport, or of a club; report to various committees and/or government agencies
- prepare, implement and monitor budgets
As a sports administrator, you could find employment in sporting clubs, associations and organising bodies. Generally, smaller sports bodies employ sports administrators on a part-time basis.
