Roles and responsibilities
General managers:
- decide on an organisation's objectives, policies and programs and set standards and targets
- assess the performance of the organisation and its activities
- provide overall direction and management of an organisation's utilisation of resources, including human resources, technology and physical assets such as buildings
- consult staff and review their recommendations and reports
- guide the preparation of reports, budgets and forecasts and present them to boards and other governing bodies
- represent the organisation in negotiations, and at meetings, conventions and seminars, and liaise with other organisations
- select or approve the selection of senior and executive staff
- authorise funds to implement policies and programs
As a general manager, you could find employment across most industry sectors. However, overall numbers are small, as there is only one such position in each organisation. Employment opportunities often rely on the state of the domestic and international markets, which in turn affects business growth. The stronger these markets are, the more opportunities arise for general managers. In Australia, a high proportion of general manager positions occur in Victoria and NSW.
